Flickr Picnikers Group: Holidays Around the World!

Flickr Picnikers Group: Holidays Around the World!

The Point: To announce another monthly contest on the Flickr Picnikers group. This one was intended to be a little different, in that we translated it into Spanish (our third-biggest country for originating traffic at the time was Mexico and many other Spanish-speaking countries weren’t far behind) to see if it couldn’t drum up some non-English language participation in that group. There are several Picnik-related fan groups on Facebook, several of which are formed by users in Latin America.

A lesson learned here: An international audience really doesn’t catch onto the American habit of referring to the holidays around Christmas as “The Holidays”. The contest got off to a slow start because, even though the group admin’s example was specifically Christmas-related and the contest took place in December, valuable time passed with people entering standard vacation picks and further clarification was necessary.

Eye Color, Oh My!

Eye Color, Oh My!

The Point: Eye Color was always going to be the biggest money earner, and as with any beauty tool, a delicate touch is needed to avoid criticism, especially with the large number of young girls in our user base. Also: Seasonal launches can easily alienate the Southern Hemisphere so even though this was entirely a Northern-dominated release, the post was designed to show a little love to our antipodean users.

Row on Row

Row on Row

The Point: It’s always tricky celebrating a solemn day, and Veteran’s Day is a perfect example: We have furniture sales, the rest of the western world lays wreathes. In an online world so dominated by the American view of things, this can sometimes lead to a little tut-tutting overseas. This post was designed to mention Veteran’s Day for our huge numbers of American users but also acknowledge the gravity of the day for our international users to avoid that discordance.

Go Pink!

Go Pink!

The Point: Picnik developed a pair of specially designed effects and special pink Shapes to help users raise awareness and increase public discourse about issues surrounding breast cancer. Pink was also the theme of the Flickr Picnikers Contest that month, as Yahoo! was donating one Euro for every pink pic added to the group to breast cancer charities across Europe. Given the subject of the post, and even though the Flickr contest posts were still being published under the designer’s name, I published this one under my own name.

Canadians Fall Into Campaign Season

Canadians Fall Into Campaign Season

The Point: Announce the addition of new Fall shapes as well as Canadian-themed shapes in time for their Federal Election, while making a joke that, while we in this country had been in the throes of an election campaign for over a year, they were getting theirs done in just thirty-seven days. It still makes me laugh.
